C’est Porc!

30 10 2008

Yesterday morning, I was in my usual routine of rushing to work. It wasn’t so crowded in the metro because it was already 09H30 – past the morning rush hour. There was an old man who sat across from me and I immediately felt strange, creepy vibes coming from him. But anyway, there was a lady who was sitting beside me so I didn’t worry so much, until she left me all alone because she had to go down on her stop.

OK, so after the lady went down, I could feel the creepy old guy watching me. I was looking at him using my peripheral vision. When I looked at the window of the metro, I saw his reflection staring at me and winking at me!

I was so surprised that my head just snapped into his direction. He began to make kissy faces while raising his eyebrows, all the while never taking his eyes off of me. Oh, the horror! It was so gross! I was seething with anger and disgust over his stomach-turning, porky acts! I transferred to another seat, but not before giving him the meanest look I could muster.

I sat with a group of women after. I was still aware of the old guy sitting maybe 3 meters from me. His back was on me so at least, I could observe this bizarro freely. A young lady sat in front of him and five minutes later, she left and transferred to another seat.

I guess Mr. Disgusting was acting disgusting towards her as well, with all that kissy face, winking, and eyebrow raising. What the hell was that? C’est porc! C’est porc! C’est porc!

Pay it Forward

29 10 2008

One time, bf and I were driving home from one of our route du vins trips. I don’t remember if I was daydreaming or sleeping, but he suddenly blurted out, “Did you see what that car did to me?” I was confused. I thought it was something mean – like the driver of the car gave him a dirty finger or a rude face, but I suddenly noticed two more cars flashing their headlights to us.

My boyfriend told me there must be a police nearby or something was very wrong with his car. Soon enough, I saw police cars and police officers. It was a good thing that we were driving within the speed limit.

Though I was relieved that we were such law abiding people :) I couldn’t help but feel amazed. This kind of road camaraderie is totally new for me. I was so not used to this. In Manila, you immediately feel a morbid kind of happiness when  you see someone arguing with a police and bribing them to not have their driver’s license confiscated.

I asked my boyfriend if he can do it just once. Pay the good deed forward! Felt good. Of course, it was illegal. People should know how to drive within the speed limit and all that, but still, it felt super to learn a not-so-secret code among motorists here.

Paris Moments

28 10 2008
Driving in Paris is hell. Each time we take the car to Paris, we get lost. Each time we get lost, bf curses nonstop – in French, which doesn’t sound so bad. But I am technically a calm person – I seldom complain. I go with the flow, but I am not a pushover as some people might see me.
Anyway, all is getting better. Pretty soon we will be nicely settled here. Fall has started, the air is crisp and fresh, the leaves are turning yellow or red, and my hair is finally getting longer.
Paris Traffic - it's not as bad as it looks

Being stuck inside a car in all this traffic is not boring, but not fun either. We waited 30 minutes or more, I think, before getting past the stop light.

All that glitters is not gold. The Eiffel Tower looks calmly bright at this photo. But before I took this picture, it was glittering like stars in the sky. After work one day, my boyfriend took me to the metro station Trocadero and we ended up taking a walk here. Sweet.

The City of Roads

I just have to post these photos of beautiful Strasbourg.

To walk along these streets is simply a pleasure. The cobblestone pavement is classic French.

One of the finest examples of late Gothic architecture is the Cathedral of Strasbourg. I haven’t gone inside yet, but next time I will. Go up the tower and get a view of Strasbourg and even see the Black Forest from the observation area! How this church was built is amazing. There is only one tower, which is the North Tower. The South Tower was never built because the foundation is not really strong for another tower.

Upper street name is in French, the one in the bottom area is translated in German – not word for word, but just enough to maintain tradition.

Our Paris Apartment

26 10 2008

After almost one month of searching for the perfect apartment, we found one that is not so perfect. Well, it will be temporary since we are just starting and everything. A 2-room apartment with a mezzanine and a nice bathroom, an American kitchen, and not a furniture in sight! Not even a fridge.

It was so hard for the first three weeks – just attending appointments, making hundreds of photocopies for documents, and then finally not hearing back from the real estate agent anymore. I even began not to care anymore. Living in a hotel was not so bad – just have to go home to Strasbourg every weekend. Then one appointment gave us what we need…for now.

We are so excited to furnish our very first apartment in France. I cannot wait to arrange the bedroom and the living room. The dining area and the kitchen is my boyfriend’s territory so I won’t even argue with him on which utensils to buy and which kitchen appliance is essential. I know I’m being boring, babbling about stupid kitchen utensils and stuff, but I cannot wait to furnish this apartment.

We actually took a look in the IKEA in Strasbourg, but I got so bored when we were in the kitchen area. I was excited when I saw the beds, cabinets, and sofas. I almost fainted with the prices. Oh man!

I don’t know where to begin. Which color scheme is the best? I want something simple and to make the apartment look bigger than its 30 square meters area. Any tips, peeps? I would appreciate it.

Apartment Hunting in Paris

8 10 2008

We have been living in a hotel for a week now, without any success of getting an apartment in Paris. It is so far from the ways of Manila, and I guess it’s normal since a lot of people want to live in Paris so much. Right now, we are in the suburbs of Paris and for 47 euros a night, we are surviving in a budget hotel. It’s cheap, for Paris standards. If you stay inside Paris, it will cost us 80 – 90 euros per night. Life is a bitch.

It’s not easy. In Manila, apartment hunting is on a first-come first-served basis. All you have to do is show the money, give 2 months deposit and 1 month advanced rent. Here in Paris, you have to call real estate agents and owners, set up an appointment to view the apartment, prepare the gazillion required documents, show up for the viewing, and then wait for a phone call. If you don’t get a phone call within 2 days, you are out. It means it’s time to look for another. Isn’t that just familiar? Feels like I just graduated from college and I am on a job hunt.

Anyhoo, be prepared to present the most personal documents you have such as:

a. Proof of Income: Last 3 payslips; most recent tax return; attestation d’employeur that states your start date in the company, your salary, bonuses and allowances. You also should not be on a trial period.

b. Guarantor: You got to have a strong guarantor if you want to strengthen your chances of being “the one”. And then again, you have to show the same required documents from your guarantor such as proof of income, a letter of declaration of your guarantor, copies of everything that can help you such a livret de famille (if you are a student and relying on your parents’ income), etc.

c. Don’t forget to photocopy your IDs – national identity card, passport, carte de sejour.

d. Personal bank account number

The profile with the strongest financial proof will be accepted. Goodluck!
